What is forex trading?
The foreign exchange (currency/forex/fx market) is linked to the exchange of currency. Official institutions such as banks actively buy and sell foreign currencies on the forex market (forex trading). Typically, forex trading involves a company or individual receiving a quantity of a certain currency in exchange for a quantity of another currency.
Who trades on the forex?
The forex market is one of the largest and fastest moving markets in the world today, and incorporates the trading of currency between central banks, corporations, governments, "currency speculators" and other institutions. Such currency speculators are the real drivers of forex trading, with a share of over 95% (vs. 5% for foreign trade). It is most common for people to focus on the major world currencies when trading and investing; US Dollar, GBP Sterling, Euro, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollar, Swiss Dollar and Canadian Dollar.
Why trade?
According to Euromoney's annual forex poll, exchange volumes grew by 41% between fiscal years 2007 and 2008. On an average day, over $3 trillion USD is exchanged on the forex market, in a true 24-hour system trading between Sydney, Tokyo, London, New York and others. Forex trading is particularly liquid and flexible, and forex traders are able to respond immediately to currency fluctuations.
